All Icelandic nouns are classified in three genders, male,
female
and neutral.
The gender of a noun is decisive in regard of declination.
Even unanimate objects are referred to as hann (he),
or hún (she).
(A book is hún and a pencil is hann,
a needle is a hún and a knife is a hann.)
Many male nouns end with -ur in the nominative
case
Many female nouns end with -a in the nominative
case
Neutral nouns do not have an ending in the nominative
case
Adjectives, and the first four numerals are declined
according to the gender of the noun referred to.
